Release date: January 14, 2000

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?Probable millennial suckfest with talents from some of 1999's worst genre films. Has been delayed for over a year; director rumored to be contemplating "Alan Smithee" credit.

THE CAST

ANGELA BASSETT: Beautiful, talented, ass-kicking actress from such movies as Strange Days, Waiting to Exhale, Malcolm X, and Boyz in the Hood. Sucky genre-related movie of 1999: Wes Craven's Music of the Heart.

LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS: Of La Bamba fame. Also appeared in Stand and Deliver and Young Guns. Was recently seen treading shit in Bats, his sucky genre movie of 1999.

VINCENT D'ONOFRIO: Best known from Men in Black, Vincent has appeared in over 40 films including Full Metal Jacket, JFK, The Player, and The Newton Boys. Sucky genre movie of 1999: The god-awful Thirteenth Floor.

WILSON CRUZ: Escapee from My So Called Life has also appeared in Johns, Joyride, Party of Five and Ally McBeal. Wilson is best known for playing someone who is gay.

THE CREW

WILLIAM MALONE: The director of 1999's terrible House on Haunted Hill is reponsible for the story on which the Supernova script was based. (The script itself was written by special FX artist Daniel Chuba.)

WALTER HILL: Director known for good (48 Hours) and not-so-good (Another 48 Hours) action fare. Has worked as a producer on some downright crappy 1990s horror movies, including Alien: Resurrection, Bordello of Blood, and Demon Knight. Said to boast unbilled credit on original Alien script, however.

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA: The Godfather director stepped in last August as a producer who may just be able to fix the film in post-production.

OTHER

Supernova is an MGM production.

THE PREMISE: Space travelers receive S.O.S from mining crew who work on the surface of a, um, comet. The crew arrives to rescue them and finds all but one dead, and a strange alien artifact. On top of that, they must deal with a star about to go -- oh yes -- supernova.

GOSSIP and USELESS FACTS:

  • Hill is rumored to be so embarrassed of Supernova that he may take a pseudonym for his directorial credit, possibly Alan Smithee.
  • The trailer for Supernova played before Bats. A dark omen, if you will.
