The 11th Hour

Lost Souls
Release date: October, 2000

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? Former actress Winona Ryder returns to supernatural fare, while Spielberg's favorite cinematographer makes his directorial debut.

THE CAST

WINONA RYDER: You may remember her from Beetlejuice, Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. This is all, of course, before Reality Bites, Boys and her wine-worthy role in Alien Resurrection.

BEN CHAPLIN: You may remember him as the cute British guy who Janeane and Uma fought over in The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Other credits include The Thin Red Line and Remains of the Day.

JOHN HURT: You may remember him as Kane from Alien, S.R. Hadden from Contact and Jason Priestly's biggest fan in Love and Death on Long Island.

ELIAS KOTEAS: You may remember him as Casey Jones in all three of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, but he later redeemed himself in Apt Pupil, Gattaca and The Thin Red Line.

THE CREW

JANUSZ KAMINSKI: It is a rare soul who can claim Oscar-winning cinematography credits for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan as well as boast of the Vanilla Ice masterwork Cool as Ice, but director Kaminski is such a man. Go white boy, go!

OTHER

Lost Souls is New Line Production produced by Pierce Gardner and Betsy Stahl (who also scripted), as well as Nina R. Sadowsky and (huh?!) Meg Ryan.

THE PREMISE: Exorcist Winona Ryder discovers a conspiracy that would lead to the unleashing of an all-powerful Satan on Earth. (Wait a second -- didn't Kaminski already cover this territory in Cool as Ice?) Lucky Ben Chaplin is Satan's earthly vessel.

GOSSIP and USELESS FACTS:

  • Despite popular opinion, this movie is not based on the Poppy Z. Brite novel of the same name.
