The 11th Hour

The Ninth Gate
Release Date: March 10, 2000

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? Roman Polanksi returns to horror with Johnny Depp and a bad-ass novel to work from.

THE CAST

JOHNNY DEPP: Is, with James Marsters, Vin Diesel, and a few other lucky, frightened men, a Patron Saint of The 11th Hour. He can be spotted in Sleepy Hollow, Astronaut's Wife, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands and running away from our enthusiastic editorial staff with a look of utmost terror in his eyes.

FRANK LANGELLA: Well I never heard of him, but apparently he's been quite successful with over 30 film credits including Cutthroat Island, Body of Evidence, 1492 and Master of the Universe, where he played Skeletor. Oh, so that's why I never heard of him...

LENA OLIN: Now why Roman Polanski would cast someone from the obnoxious Polish Wedding is beyond me, but here's Lena, and she's also appeared in Mystery Men, Hamilton and a lot of Swedish movies.

EMMANUELLE SINGER: Now why Roman Polanski would cast someone whose credits are basically a bunch of little-known French movies... oh wait, she's his wife. Never mind.

THE CREW

ROMAN POLANSKI: Incredible, masterful Polish director came to America and made such fine films as Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby, and such huge mistakes as shtupping a drugged 13-year-old girl and becoming permenantly exiled from the nation. Mr. Polanski now lives in France.

OTHER

The Ninth Gate is a release from Artisan Entertainment produced by Michel Cheyko and Wolfgang Glattes.

THE PREMISE: Johnny Depp searches for the last existing copies of the seventeenth-century Book of the Nine Doors to the Kingdom of Darkness, which apparently can conjure up Satan. Trouble ensues.

GOSSIP and USELESS FACTS:

  • Based on the novel The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
  • Release date moved up from July to December, and then from December to March. Already opened in Europe to weak reviews. Not a good sign.
