The 11th Hour

Letters

Quote of the Month: "It must be really tiring to have yet another email complimenting your webmag."-- Nina, profoundly overestimating our self-esteem

Wow. 11th Hour again received a record amount of reader mail, thanks largely to the fact that we actually lasted a year with this half-brained operation. We would like to thank everyone who wrote in, including those whose letters are not printed here, and hope that you don't all want to kill us because we're taking the month of August off. (For more information regarding our "break" -- do you call updating the news daily a break? -- click here.) But seriously, thank you. You made us all very happy, and as we rapidly approach total burn out, you showed wise timing in your actions. The features section of 11th Hour will be back come September, refreshed, reinvigorated, and full of life -- really -- and until then, we hope you continue to visit daily throughout July and August, and look upon these letters with something other than ironic disgust. Love ya, and see you at Comic Con!

Must be something in the water...

Just read your article on your first anniversary. Congratulations, first of all, and thank you second. As mentioned in your article I am one of the many who picked up on AICN's mention & have been a devotee ever since. Yes I find the site informative, love the fact that you do have more in-depth articles but mainly I love it because it makes me laugh. It really is fun to read, and I hope that you continue to have fun putting it together. If the continued success of this magazine depends on advertising or subscription then put me down, I'd rather pay than not have it at all (I obviously like the fact it's free & downloads speedily).
If this is madness, then long may it reign.
-- Becky Jones, London, England.

Happy Birthday, 11thhour! You are the coolest. (Okay, maybe that doesn't mean so much coming from me, but whatever.) Kick-ass writing, fascinating interviews, great graphics (plus those James Marsters pictures) make this site a 'must-visit-often' for me. Thanks so much for all your hard work!
-- Emma Holly

Hey gals! Thank you for all your hard work. I have an idea of how much effort goes into putting a on-line resource together. Now, everything I have done has been a one time thing with small up dates. I've done a Triumph (the band) fan site and a Brisco site most notably. I can't even imagine writing a monthly e-zine time page! Wow! Anyway, keep up the good work and know that we, the great unwashed masses, are out here watching and reading and thinking right along with you. Congratulations and thanks,
-- Michael Thomson

How not to sound like a hopelessly adoring fan "chick"? I haven't the foggiest. However, I do spent roughly 2 out of my 10 hour monthly Internet allotment on the11thhour.com each month. Keep up the fantastic work, the quips, the droolworthy pics, the Marsters refs, the interviews, and the well-written, intelligent job you're doing so well. Congratulations on being a year old. Please, please, PLEASE don't burn out.
-- Dawn

Longtime reader (well, since last year, anyway) and first-time writer Here. I really enjoyed the "Hidden Depths" and "Naked Truth" pieces in the latest issue, so much so that I was moved to write, the first time in a year of Internet-surfing that I have done so. I was one of those people who found your site through AICN, which I continue to check on a daily basis. I come back every month to check you folks out, however, in part because of the emphasis on Buffy, perhaps the best series on television right now, next to (the sometimes pretty spotty) The Simpsons. Anyway, to the point: I say "in part" because the other reason I keep coming back to your site is because it is well-written, has more than a passing knowledge of grammar and punctuation and doesn't look -- as Robin Williams said years ago -- like Walt Disney threw up.
As a longtime feminist married to a longtime feminist, I also enjoy the female-centric slant of some of the articles. Hey, if Harry Knowles can slobber (and there's a pretty picture, isn't it?) about X-Men actresses, you people are more than welcome to comment about Marc Blucas or David Boreanaz (I know my wife does). As a longtime journalist (more than 20 years writing for a daily newspaper), I really appreciate the careful effort that goes into The 11th Hour. I certainly hope that, sponsor or not, your efforts continue and are rewarded. Thanks for a fun year.
-- Keith Roysdon

I would just like to add my congratulations to the undoubtedly overflowing mail box you receive. I've been a quietly lurking fan of the 11th hour for around nine months now and I have to comment that for standards of wit and originality and sheer intelligence (a thing that is surprisingly lacking on the web despite the over qualification of many net heads) you -- to paraphrase a Brit expression -- take the biscuit. You consistently entertain, inform and amuse while getting to the heart of the issues that many of us sadly obsessed fans are curious about. (And what does James Marsters prefer -- briefs or boxers?) Coming from little 'ol Britain I often find myself relying on sites like yours for any information on the latest Buffy or Angel plotline or the biographical details of the delicious Ben Bowder (red & black leather any one? Purrr....) lest I languish in fan plotline limbo. And categorically for humour, intelligence and sheer enthusiasm you get my vote. So to you and yours... Slainte!
-- Siobhan Gillespie

Lisa responds: To answer your question, Siobhan... James refuses to wear either. Whooo!

Hello! It must be really tiring to have yet another email complimenting your webmag, but I was... spurred to write this after reading your article celebrating your one year anniversary (congrats by the way). So here comes the inevitable... Are you people insane?? For free???
Wow. Anyway, I became your loyal reader somewhere around the time when Episode 1 came out, and my main source for SW news, theforce.net, constantly included you in their daily updates concerning the articles you wrote. I fell in love with your style (maybe because I do think like y'all; hope I'm not flattering myself) and I've subscribed ever since.
Just one request... despite the fact B5 have been off the air for quite a while, (could you write a feature article about the show or its spinoff... I mean, besides the occasional mention, I mean.
-- Nina

Sarah responds: Does the word "Doyle" mean anything to you? Okay, it probably means something different to you than it does to us, but we have a great interview with B5's Michael Garibaldi in our current issue.

Congratulations, from yet another chick who loves the same stuff. Thanks you for bringing your reader's attention to some wonderfully talented people like Morgan and Wong, and a place to mourn those we've lost. I do so miss Doyle. Thank you for more pictures and stories on James Marsters, David Boreanaz, Nick Lea, oh, you know the list. Grateful in Minnesota,
-- Rosemary Ighel

I have to heartily apologize to the wonderful staff of writers and creators of the 11th Hour for my failure to bow so humbly before their presence until now. For vainly, once a month, I'd hit on my 11th Hour bookmark to read the wonderfully written articles, interviews and reviews of my favorite TV shows. I'd hurt myself laughing at Rachel's wonderful whit and banter on her views of this genre's toys (still looking for a vampire Angel), the wardrobe and hairstyles of our favorite TV characters (you bashed the Buffy crimping, but failed to mention how JonBenet she looks in the curls and turtleneck) and how the death of our favorite characters truly effects us. (Yes, I have found the will to move on without Doyle).
I'd sit in wonder that despite Lisa's love of Buffy and Angel, just how shrewd and hard she can get in her reviews of Joss & Co when they didn't fully deliver. While I don't agree on your review of "I'll Always Remember You," (I think Joss was cleverly telling B/A fans that this is as close it will get and that it's truly over for those two), I will be first in line to the Darla and Jheira, fight to the death. (I'm still miffed on how long it took me to recover from the black eye I got when Bai Ling's breasts just came out of my TV and hit me.)
Most importantly, when I thought I was just feeding my taste for info on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (no pun intended... well maybe a little), you made me realize that I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy freak, geek, or whatever the heck term is. Years of watching Star Wars, The Princess Bride, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the countless other shows and movies, I came to understand that what I thought was mainstream really was a world of its own. And I'm smack dab in the middle of it, enjoying the ride!
But it wasn't until reading your Anniversary article that I came to realize the battle you girls (and guys) face just to be there for us on every 11th of each month. I don't spend that much time on the computer (and when I do, I'm picky at what I read), I never knew what it was like out there in the great vastness called the Internet. So I applaud you for sticking to your convictions of providing your readers the best quality stories without falling back on the easy way out of doing your job.
So promise never to take medications that would cure you of the insanity of bringing us this great site every month. And if you really want me to kiss your asses, please circle the target area and I'll humbly bow before them. But before I do so, let me thank you again for the wonderful year of fab articles, the many shots of James Marsters and David Boreanaz striking a pose and the laughter at myself and this genre. You showed me a new part of myself and I thank you for it. And by the way, those million dollar checks to each of you are on their way. Really, they are.
-- Estefena U.

Lisa responds: Estefena, it's cruel to taunt us that way. Still waiting on that check...

I've gotta say, that as a gay man, I get a real kick out of your site/magazine. The unabashed objectification of these guys is such a turn around from the mainstream media, without the annoying self-conscious/self-righteous tone found in genre reviews in "gay" media. I've been a "subscriber" since issue one and I just have to say "thanks and keep up the good work!"
-- FCHORNIK

I discovered The 11th Hour a few issues back, and have enjoyed the articles to the point that I've been found hiding under my desk laughing hysterically. It was just the dog, but she found me. I just wanted to say what a kick (and education) I have gotten from your web magazine. You guys are bright, funny, literate, and you obviously know how to type. I have really enjoyed the articles and daily news, plus the archived articles I've read. I don't know if it's the material, the puns, the endless metaphors, the attacks on hateful writers, producers, CEO's... Okay, I do know... it's the attitude. Gotta love it!
-- Liz B

I've just found your site and wanted all of you to know how impressed I am. At 32 yrs old most of the sci-fi fan sites I visit leave me feeling like an grandfather, (that's right kiddies, I stood in line for the 'real' first episode). The 11th Hour has some of the best writing I've found and it's the first site in a few years that I've read every page of, even the message boards. Harkens back to 'the good old days on the net'. When was that, '98? '99? It's all foggy now... Thanks for making my day.
-- Doug Richards

Slam-bang mag, I feel compelled to tell you. I discovered your page a couple weeks ago and instantly read through all the back issues as well. Cool subjects, fun attitude - that's what I like to see. I especially liked the article on why Star Trek is going downhill, and curse you guys for getting me hooked on Buffy. I did not need another addiction at this point.
-- Justin Olivetti

I'm afraid I don't have anything very clever or profound to say, certainly nothing up to the usual standards of your staff writing. I just wanted to thank all of you for the entertaining articles you provide every month. There are plenty of sites devoted to genre media. There are even a few that manage to provide interesting information and opinions. Among those rarefied few the 11th Hour stands out for its consistently smart writing and editing. Thanks!
-- Bob Quinlan

Just wanted you to know that I love the site and all things Buffy, Angel, Matrix and all things Michael Biehn and Eric Close that you feature. It's great to see a feminine take on science fiction and I check your site daily just for the clever comments on the news archives. Tuning in for as long as the site exists,
-- Linda Thackeray
