"I didn't want anything to do with it. Star Trek wasn't my thing," quips the son of the man known to millions of fans as the "great bird of the galaxy," Gene Roddenberry, who created the television empire that is Star Trek. "I was just a privileged child, a little bit spoiled. Star Trek didn't surround my life at all, nor did I care about it. It wasn't until my father passed away that I started to appreciate and understand how he and the show had affected the world."
It was this tragic incident that propelled Eugene W. Roddenberry, Jr. into his own television world, that of Earth: Final Conflict. "Right now, I'm a technical advisor on the show. Basically, it's a homemade title I gave myself, because they were initially planning to give me a clerical job, but I really felt I had more to contribute to the show than filing papers." Though still working in the lower echelons of the show, his input often proves invaluable. "I give my two cents on every script revision and outline that comes through. Mainly, I'm concerned with continuity."

Roddenberry is quick to admit that producing a quality science fiction show in syndication can be a daunting task. "Someone wrote a great article once," he recalls, "and this is my belief as well -- as far as money goes, if you make an action-packed, T&A-filled show, most people will come home, flip it on in the background, and they will watch it. It doesn't have to be intellectually stimulating; it will still bring in the money. But while the shows that are intellectually stimulating appeal to a much smaller group, that group is more loyal. Sure, it doesn't bring in the kind of numbers you want, but it's a sacrifice. It's really about finding that happy medium. I'm not gonna say I've found it yet, but I recognize what it is. I think we all do."
